Following public meetings and consultation during 2007/2008 a steering group was established to determine the details of the scheme and how it should operate.
WCSA is a CIC (Community Interest Company) co-operative. The company is owned by the membership and every member has one vote at general meetings. A Board of Directors is elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Other members can also contribute to the running of the activities by joining a sub-group or helping at events.

As the scheme develops it is anticipated that there will be many more benefits to members in addition to a supply of fresh food locally grown without artificial chemicals. Social events and celebrations will become part of the life of the co-operative as a way of connecting food and community.
Members are committed to purchasing a 'share of the harvest' each season and will pay for this by a monthly Food Share subscription. When there is not enough produce from our land (e.g. during the 'hungry gap') and especially during the early stages of bringing the land into cultivation, shares will be supplemented by organically grown produce sourced as locally as possible.
We have secured 2 plots of land, one just outside Frosterley and one more sheltered smaller plot in Stanhope. We are preparing the land with the help of volunteers at present.
